Music Ministry & Choirs

Be a part of Sacred Heart Music Ministry!

As St. Augustine once said, “those who sing pray twice!” If you love to sing – or if you play an instrument – let us know.  We’d love to share your gift with the Parish as part of the liturgy.  Sacred Heart has a broad range of musical offerings, suiting different ages, musical tastes, and schedules.

Parishioners who participate in the music program consider it a centerpiece of their Sacred Heart experience.  Many have been volunteers with the Music Ministry for years.  If you sang in a choir in school, if you ever played an instrument in an orchestra or band, or just love to sing around the house, you will feel right at home here.

The choirs and ensembles are open to musicians of all ages who wish to share their gifts in praise and worship of God.

Adult Choir
The Adult Choir sings at the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Sundays from September through mid-June, and at special masses throughout the year.  The choir rehearses on Thursday nights from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the music studio of Parish Center (lower level).

Music ranges from sacred motets, oratorio (e.g. selections from Handel’s “Messiah” and Mendelsohn’s “Christus” and “Elijah”) and plainchant to spirituals, gospel and traditional hymns.

Saturday Contemporary Choir
The Saturday Contemporary Choir sings at the 5:00 p.m. Mass each week, and rehearses before Mass and at extra times that are arranged seasonally. Instrumentalists (wind, guitar, string or keyboard) are also most welcome!

One Voice
One Voice, our high school and college-age choir, sings at the 4:30 p.m. mass on Sundays from September through mid-June (except during exams and holidays).  One Voice rehearses at 3:00 p.m. each Sunday in the Parish Center, and as scheduled by the director to prepare for special seasonal Liturgies.

One Voice has a contemporary Christian rock sound and appeals to singers and parishioners of all ages.  Instrumentalists – guitar, drums, piano – are also a key part of One Voice.

Children’s Choirs
For many children, this is their first experience with an organized choir, and music director Kathy Janega Keenan ensures that the experience is a joyful one.  Sacred Heart has two choirs for the children in Sacred Heart’s parish school and religious education program, one for Grades 1 through 4, and one for Grades 5 through 8. The two Children’s Choirs combine to sing at two Sunday liturgies each month, at a 10:30 a.m. Mass, and at the 4:30 p.m. Family Mass.  Rehearsals are held in the Parish Center on the other Sundays.

Would you like to learn more about the Sacred Heart Wicks Pipe Organ, Opus 3958, which was installed in 1959? The following link to the Organ Historical Society database contains information and pictures about our organ:  The following announcement appeared in the September 20, 1959 issue of The Tower: “In the process of being assembled in the choir loft of our church is a new organ. It is the gift of an individual who made a donation to replace the old instrument which had so deteriorated that it was beyond repair.” Sadly, the Wicks Organ Company located in Highland, Illinois, ceased the production of new organs in 2010 due to the present economic situation. The firm produced well over 6,000 pipe organs for churches, colleges and other institutions since the early 1900’s.
