Altar Server Information

Dear Parents:

Altar Serving is one of the earliest ministries our children are welcome to join. Your third grader is now eligible to begin Altar Serving Ministry this summer.  Training is scheduled on June 1 and 2 for Sacred Heart Elementary Students 3:15 – 4:15 p.m. and June 1 and 2 for Sacred Heart Religious Education Students 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. This will ensure that the new servers are included in the summer Mass schedule.

We welcome all new servers to this special ministry. If your child is interested and will be committed to this special ministry, please complete the Altar Server Information Form below or send the enclosed copy to the Parish Office, 1077 Tower Rd, Winnetka, Il 60093 by May 25.

At the training sessions, we walk through a “pretend” Mass. We show all the items necessary for the Mass and the proper placement of these items. We also introduce new vocabulary for these items.

Your child’s first serving experience will be this summer. He or she will be partnered with an experienced server and asked to serve at least 6 consecutive days of 8:30 a.m. Masses. Your child will also serve a Sunday Mass.

On Mass days, your child is expected to be in the sacristy 15 minutes prior to the start of Mass. Servers are expected to find a substitute should the need arise and accordingly, they will receive a list of eligible substitutes upon completion of the training. The server schedule is posted in the weekly bulletin, The Tower which is also available on the parish website at

Please understand how important Altar Servers are to the celebration of the Mass. This is a beautiful ministry. We are grateful to you for your consideration and support of their service.
